Books, Bags, and Forms

The Nook Checkout is still going strong. I just added new books. We have a combination of the main book used in each grade, classics, and popular series titles. I did an informal survey of students coming to the library to choose what books to add. Barnes and Noble did a few weeks of classics for free and I made sure to download them. We also have these series: Mortal Instruments, Gone, Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, Gallagher Girls, Vladimir Tod, Maximum Ride and some stand… Continue

First Checkouts!

Holy Moley! Today I announced to students that we have 5 Nooks available for checkout. I reminded them they would have to complete an agreement form and have it signed by their parents. By the end of the day, all but 1 Nook was checked out!

Not how I saw things going. I was hoping that students would use the computer catalog to look up a book and if the book was out, but a nook version was available, they would then want to check out the Nook. Students did not even check to see what… Continue

Nook Update and Checkout Thoughts

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but it was a busy summer. I've just gotten all except 2 Nooks back (one I have) and am getting them ready to use with students. There was some press when we received the grant so most of the students know about the Nooks and are super excited.

The staff members who tested the Nooks this summer really enjoyed them. The only naysayer was the principal who said she likes looking at printed books too much to get an ereader. I reminded her that it's just… Continue

Hi Kathy,

Will DeLamater recommended that I contact you.  I am finishing up my masters degree in library science and my dissertation project is on using e-readers with students for instructional purposes.  I am interviewing educators about their experience with this.  Is this something that you would be interested in helping me with?  Just let me know!  Thanks!!

Hi Kathy! I'm in the same spot as you re: Kindle/Nook. Our business office didn't want to use Amazon. So it's Nooks for us. I'm in a grade 7-12 school. Handing out our first set of 12 Nooks this week, with another 12 later this summer. Most of my takers were also Social Studies and English, though I did get a few takers from art, business, and foreign language--and lots of interest from Special Education consultant teachers. QUESTION: are you loading content on individual Nooks, or in sets of 6? HAve you found a way to work with your purchasing dept to allow faculty to add content, or does it all have to be controlled by your purch. dept?

Hi Kathy, welcome! What role do you see the Kindle or other ereader playing in the school library of the future??
