Jaynen Kates replied to Bette's discussion Password? for Kindle
"Unless I am mistaken, I believe you can register and de-register a kindle as many times as you want. Wouldn't it solve the problem if the school just de-registered the kindles before allowing the students to use them. Students could actually…"

Jaynen, I have focused in my professional work on helping older struggling readers. I think that one of the things to explore about the Kindle is the text-to-speech function which is fine if not great. Older kids benefit from the scaffolding of the audio while they read the print version. Usually that means a print book and a CD player, but the Kindle can combine both functions. The other way to go is to download the audiobook version from Audible, load it on the Kindle, and have the students listen and read. This could be a strong way to attract funding as the addition of a "modeled fluent reading" to the mix makes a big difference for older struggling readers. For example, you can purchase the Kindle edition of Among the Hidden for $5.59 and the Audible downloadable audiobook for $21.53, so you could bake those kinds of numbers into your grant proposal. Just one thought!

I am currently working with the English/L.A. teacher who wants to write a grant to get some kindles and document cameras for the district. We're not really sure where to start and would greatly appreciate ideas for how kindles can be used in the classroom. Are there any examples of lesson plans that utilize the kindle?
